Understanding the different levels of pediatric ventilatory support can help ease parents' concerns during critical care. Dr. Shiju Kumar C Consultant & Chief Intensivist, Pediatrics Dr. Shiju breaks down the three primary types of breathing support used for children in the ICU: High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) : The lowest form of support, delivering humidified oxygen to conscious children experiencing conditions like bronchiolitis, mild asthma, or pneumonia. Non-Invasive Ventilation: Utilizes a mask to deliver positive pressure for more moderate to severe respiratory distress, while the child remains conscious. Invasive Ventilation: Reserved for critical conditions like severe pneumonia, cardiac dysfunction, or brain injury. The child is sedated and intubated for complete airway support. Fortunately, most children can be safely weaned off this support within 3 to 4 days.
