                              General & Minimally Invasive Surgery

If you are having surgery, whether planned ahead or sudden, it is a significant moment in your life. The Department of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery at KIMSHEALTH is always here for you to ensure you feel at ease during treatment.

Our experienced surgeons and staff come together as a caring team to handle a wide range of medical issues, from simple to more challenging cases. The team takes a collaborative approach to pinpoint problems and take quick action with surgery when needed. We specialise in both general procedures and less invasive surgical techniques.

General and Minimally Invasive Surgery use different methods to perform surgeries with less harm to the body compared to open surgery. This type of surgery causes less pain, decreases hospital stays, and reduces the risk of complications. Laparoscopic surgery involves making one or more small cuts and utilises slender tubes, small cameras, and surgical tools.

Advancements in minimally invasive techniques provide an effective choice to treat many conditions. If surgery is required and you believe this method could work for you, discuss it with our surgeons at the Department of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Who Can Choose Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is often safer than traditional open surgery in many cases. Some patients who cannot undergo open surgery might still qualify for minimally invasive procedures. But these techniques can take more time and may need preparation in advance. This makes them less suitable in emergencies or when doctors aren't sure about your condition yet.

Laparoscopic surgery may not be the best option for people with certain heart or lung problems. It involves using gases to inflate the abdominal area to separate organs from the abdominal wall. These gases might raise the chances of heart or lung issues in some patients during surgery. The surgeon will evaluate your specific risks before suggesting this approach.

KIMSHEALTH's Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine provides top-level anaesthetic care to the patients. Each year, anesthesiologists look after over a lakh patients. This high patient count combined with active research efforts and hands-on educational programs, builds extensive knowledge in anesthetic care and managing patients during surgery and recovery. The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine includes adult and paediatric anesthesiologists who work together and share a strong commitment to offering the best care possible. Some department members lead key basic and clinical research projects, while others focus on offering engaging courses to learners for ongoing education.

                              What does Anesthesia mean?

Anesthesia uses special drugs called anaesthetics to prevent pain during surgeries or medical procedures. These drugs block pain signals from travelling through your nerves to your brain. Different types of anesthesia have different purposes. Some numb a specific area of your body. Others work by making your brain numb, helping you sleep during major surgeries.

                              Types of Anesthesia

The choice of anesthesia depends on what procedure you are having and how extensive it is. Here are the options:

                              • Local anesthesia: This makes a small part of your body numb. Doctors often use this type to perform minor procedures like skin biopsies or cataract surgeries. You stay awake during these procedures.
                              • Sedation: Also called "twilight sleep," this anesthesia makes you relaxed enough to drift off but still able to wake up if doctors need to talk to you. Wisdom teeth removal, cardiac catheterisation, and some colonoscopies often involve sedation. You don't lose full consciousness, but you won't recall much about the procedure after it's done.
                              • Regional anesthesia: This anesthesia numbs a bigger section of your body, like a whole limb or everything below your chest. Examples include an epidural to lessen labour pain or nerve block. Doctors may pair regional anesthesia with sedation, or they might use it on its own.
                              • General anesthesia: This approach puts you in a deep sleep and blocks pain or other sensations. Doctors often use it to perform major surgeries on the head, chest, or abdomen.

                              Clinical Nutrition

The Clinical Nutrition Department offers help to people dealing with nutrition issues caused by diseases. A team made up of dietitians, nutrition technicians, nurses, and doctors focuses on giving complete care to meet unique nutrition needs.

A registered dietitian focuses on medical nutrition therapy using a science-based approach. They look at your condition, health status, injury, or goals to create a plan that boosts your health and recovery. Keep in mind not all "nutritionists" are trained. Always check their qualifications and background.

Many people turn to a registered dietitian (RD) to get advice on various matters. Some aim to improve their overall health and figure out how to eat better to lower the chances of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or cancer. Others focus on learning about sports nutrition, keeping their weight in check, or staying healthy as they grow older. An RD can create a diet plan that matches your personal goals and needs.

Dr. Leena Saju leads our skilled group of dietitians who collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare experts. They aim to give patients, both admitted and visiting, nutrition advice based on solid evidence. The dietetic team brings knowledge in areas like nutrition support critical care, heart health, kidney conditions, neurological disorders, digestive issues, cancer treatment, and weight management, including bariatric surgery.

Have you ever wanted a single place to address all your family’s health issues? At KIMSHEALTH, family medicine care teams focus on giving complete and organised care to everyone in the family—from newborns to the elderly.

                              What is a Family Physician?

Family doctors focus on treating you as an entire individual. Unlike specialists who focus on one disease or body part, family physicians are trained to meet your health needs regardless of your gender or age. Family medicine is built on a personal and ongoing relationship between you and your physician. Together, we aim to reach the best possible health results while managing costs. Besides treating and diagnosing both chronic and short-term illnesses, your family doctor helps with regular health check-ups and advises you on ways to avoid getting sick in the first place. If you ever need help from a specialist for a specific health issue, the KIMSHEALTH Family Medicine team supports you by managing your care and ensuring everything runs smoothly. They help you navigate the complicated health system if you need to see multiple specialists.

Family doctors are trained to care for people at every stage of life, from babies to seniors, and they are skilled in several important medical fields, including:

                              Infectious Diseases

Infectious Disease is one of the most wanted specialities for a country like India, where infectious diseases are common, yet Infectious Disease specialists are scarce. Infectious Disease specialists manage infections across all specialities, from simple to complicated infections, undiagnosed infections and infections affecting internal organs. Infections affecting those with reduced immunity are caused by rare infections and need special tests to diagnose and manage; these are taken care of by Infectious Disease specialists.

We diagnose and manage viral, bacterial infections, fungal, parasitic infections and other rare infections.

                              Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, often called physiatry, focuses on helping people regain abilities lost because of illness, injury, or a medical condition.

Physiatry takes a complete approach to recovery by combining different types of care to restore the overall well-being of patients. It looks after their physical health, emotional state, medical issues, work potential, and social life. A physician trained in this area is known as a physiatrist. Rehabilitation helps people regain their highest ability to function, live, and enjoy a good quality of life. It does not fix or undo the harm caused by illness or injury. Instead, it focuses on returning the person to their best possible health, abilities, and overall well-being. To rehabilitate means to make capable.

Rehabilitation medicine focuses on meeting the unique needs of each individual. This means every program is tailored to the person. Common parts of rehab programs often include:

                              • Addressing the main illness and stopping complications
                              • Working on disabilities to improve abilities
                              • Offering tools that make tasks easier and changing living spaces
                              • Guiding patients and their families to adjust to new life changes

Rehab works well when multiple factors come together, such as:

                              • How severe or advanced the disease, disorder, or injury is
                              • The kind and level of impairments or disabilities it causes
                              • How healthy the patient is overall
                              • Support offered by the family

                              Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology

The Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology handles illnesses that occur when issues arise in the body’s immune system. Think of the immune system as the body’s security team built to protect us from harm. But when it goes wrong, it attacks the body’s own cells and tissues instead of protecting them. These problems result in what we call autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases range from mild problems to serious or even deadly illnesses. These conditions often affect different parts of the body all at once. Doctors use a thorough method to diagnose and manage them. An autoimmune disease might affect the skin, weaken muscles, cause joint pain like arthritis, or even harm organs like the lungs or kidneys. A good specialist looks at all these symptoms together to decide on the right treatment plan.

Many used to think autoimmune diseases were uncommon, but they are widespread. The main problem is that people know too little about them. This leads to long delays in diagnosing the illness, which means patients don’t get the help they need.

If you notice signs affecting several organs in your body at the same time, you should visit a specialist like a Rheumatologist or Clinical Immunologist.

Rheumatologists at KIMSHEALTH work as part of a team to deliver advanced diagnosis and care. They focus on autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that involve the musculoskeletal system, such as issues in joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

At KIMSHEALTH, the specialists under the leadership of Dr S Rajesh team up with doctors from different fields based on the type of rheumatologic disease. They also stay in contact with your regular doctor to make sure your care is consistent and transitions are smooth when needed. By working together, they provide well-rounded care aimed at taking care of your unique health requirements.

The Department of Transfusion Medicine at KIMSHEALTH Hospital Trivandrum is a NABH-accredited and licensed Blood Centre. We are only a few of the centres in the country with an NABH accreditation given in isolation. We received our NABH accreditation in 2012, and since then, we are continuously receiving this accreditation to date. This is a testament to our commitment to the highest standards of safety and quality.

To encourage voluntary donations, we offer free valet parking for donors coming to our centre. We also provide complimentary annual health checkups if you donate more than three times a year. Our clinical outcomes reflect our commitment to safety. The annual incidence rates of allergic reactions and FNHTR (Febrile Non-Hemolytic Transfusion Reactions) are just 0.17% and 0.14%, respectively. These rates are lower than various national and international benchmarks, reinforcing our commitment to excellence in transfusion medicine.

                              Test description

                              a. HLA Flowcrossmatch

HLA flow crossmatch (FCXM) is a test used to assess compatibility between a donor and recepient. It evaluates whether the recipeint has antibodies against donor human leukocyte antigens, which could lead to organ rejection post transplant. FCXM has much more sentisitvity than CDC crossmatch

                              b. Stem cell CD34 enumeration

CD34 stem cell enumeration by flowcytometry is used to quantify CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells in the blood sample. It helps to evaluate,

                              • To evaluate the suitability of stem cell donors or grafts for transplantation.
                              • To quantify CD34 cells collected during peripheral blood stem cell mobilization or harvest to ensure an adequate dose for transplantation.

                              c. Acute leukemia panel

Acute leukemia panel is a diagnostic test used to evaluate and classify leukemia specifically acute leukemia. This panel uses flowcytometry to identify and quantify abnormal cells in bone marrow, blood or other tissue by analyzing the expression of specific surface and intracellular markers.

                              It can be used:

                              • to identify leukemia subtypes based on immunophenotyping
                              • to classify leukemia and differentiate it from lymphoma
                              • to assess markers associated with prognosis and guide treatment decisions
                              • to identify targeted markers for therapy for monoclonal antibody treatments

                              d. Chronic lymphoproliferative disorder / CLPD Panel

The chronic lymphoproliferative disorder (CLPD) panel or Lymphoma panel by flowcytometry is a diagnostic test designed to evaluate lymphoid malignancies. It helps in evaluating and sub categorize non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It can be used

                              • to confirm or rule out chronic lymphoproliferative disorders
                              • to distinguish between reactive lymphocytosis and malignant lymphoproliferation
                              • to identify cell surface markers that indicate the aggressiveness of the disease.

                              e. CD4/8 counts

The CD4/8 count is performed to quantify specific types of T lymphocytes (T helper and cytotoxic) in the immune system. These counts are commonly used in immunology and infectious disease management, particularly monitoring conditions like AIDS/HIV, autoimmune diseases etc.

                              f. CD 19 and CD 20 counts

CD19/CD 20 count flow cytometry is a test that measures the number of CD19+ B cells in the body to help diagnose and monitor conditions that affect the immune system. It is used to evaluate treatment response to anti CD-19 /Anti CD 20 monoclonal antibodies

                              g. Lymphocyte subset analysis (TBNK)

This is a basic immunodeficiency screening panel and is used to monitor and evaluate the immune system
