How is colon cancer diagnosed..? Dr. Shabeerali T U, consultant in hepatobiliary Surgery surgical gastroenterology and liver transplantation at Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences, Trivandrum. Colorectal cancer as I've told whenever there is a symptom related to colon cancer like a blood in stools and unexplained anemia in elderly people they should attend a proper medical care and especially when there is a symptoms related to large intestine. This person should attend a proper gastroenterology service, that is they should attend a medical gastroenterologist and they should get a colonoscopy done. So this medical person will usually evaluate them and if he finds out that the symptoms are something related to colorectal cancer they should get a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is a video endoscope which you can pass across the anus and you can examine the whole intestine So this colonoscopy can pick up most of the tumors, if it is in as I am told in bleeding PR sometimes the most of the tumors will be within the reach of a finger so when they go to a medical person they can do a rectal examination and they can find out the tumor and there are other ancillary tests associated as along with colonoscopy like CT scan especially when you are diagnosed with a conical cancer then you may need additional tests like a CT scan or if it is in the rectum you may need an MRI to see how much the tumor has progressed and to see whether the tumor has spread into other organs which will decide the treatment plan.
