What happen during the procedure & how long does the surgery last? Dr. Shafy Ali Khan, consultant in the department of general minimal access and bariatric surgery at KIMS, Trivandrum. In bariatric surgery the digestive processes changed so that there is a restriction of food intake as well as less absorption of food from the digestive tract. In some procedures the size of the stomach is reduced to up to 80% of its original size which will reduce the hunger of the patient as well as the amount of food that he or she may be able to take and also reduce the absorptive surface from which the absorption takes place. Normal bariatric surgery lasts about 3 to 3 and a half hours but the patient will be in the operating room for the preparation for surgery and post-operative recovery for about an additional 3 hours.
