Transfusion Medicine / Blood centre
The Department of Transfusion Medicine at KIMSHEALTH Hospital Trivandrum is a NABH-accredited and licensed Blood Centre, operating 24/7 to provide essential support to patients requiring blood transfusions. Our department is equipped with robust processes and protocols to meet the evolving needs of both patients and clinicians.
To ensure safe and efficient blood collection, component separation, and storage, we utilize state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure. We are proud to be one of the few centres in the country with NABH accreditation which we are continuously maintaining since 2012.
To encourage and promote voluntary blood donations, we offer complimentary valet parking for all donors visiting our centre. Additionally, donors who contribute at least three times a year receive a complimentary annual health check-up.
Our commitment to patient safety is clearly reflected in our clinical outcomes. The annual incidence rates for allergic reactions and Febrile Non-Hemolytic Transfusion Reactions (FNHTR) are notably low at 0.17% and 0.14%, respectively. These figures are below several national and international benchmarks, underscoring our dedication to excellence in transfusion medicine.

Test Description
HLA Flowcrossmatch
HLA flow crossmatch (FCXM) is a test used to assess compatibility between a donor and recepient. It evaluates whether the recipeint has antibodies against donor human leukocyte antigens, which could lead to organ rejection post transplant. FCXM has much more sentisitvity than CDC crossmatch
Stem Cell CD34 Enumeration
CD34 stem cell enumeration by flowcytometry is used to quantify CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells in the blood sample. It helps to evaluate,
- To evaluate the suitability of stem cell donors or grafts for transplantation.
- To quantify CD34 cells collected during peripheral blood stem cell mobilization or harvest to ensure an adequate dose for transplantation.
Acute Leukemia Panel
Acute leukemia panel is a diagnostic test used to evaluate and classify leukemia specifically acute leukemia. This panel uses flowcytometry to identify and quantify abnormal cells in bone marrow, blood or other tissue by analyzing the expression of specific surface and intracellular markers. It can be used:
- To identify leukemia subtypes based on immunophenotyping
- To classify leukemia and differentiate it from lymphoma
- To assess markers associated with prognosis and guide treatment decisions
- To identify targeted markers for therapy for monoclonal antibody treatments
Chronic Lymphoproliferative Disorder / CLPD Panel
The chronic lymphoproliferative disorder (CLPD) panel or Lymphoma panel by flowcytometry is a diagnostic test designed to evaluate lymphoid malignancies. It helps in evaluating and sub categorize non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It can be used
- To confirm or rule out chronic lymphoproliferative disorders
- To distinguish between reactive lymphocytosis and malignant lymphoproliferation
- To identify cell surface markers that indicate the aggressiveness of the disease.
CD4/8 Counts
The CD4/8 count is performed to quantify specific types of T lymphocytes (T helper and cytotoxic) in the immune system. These counts are commonly used in immunology and infectious disease management, particularly monitoring conditions like AIDS/HIV, autoimmune diseases etc.
CD 19 and CD 20 Counts
CD19/CD 20 count flow cytometry is a test that measures the number of CD19+ B cells in the body to help diagnose and monitor conditions that affect the immune system. It is used to evaluate treatment response to anti CD-19 /Anti CD 20 monoclonal antibodies
Lymphocyte Subset Analysis (TBNK)
This is a basic immunodeficiency screening panel and is used to monitor and evaluate the immune system
