Laryngology

Laryngology focuses on identifying and treating problems in the larynx, also called the voice box. Your larynx is located in the front part of your neck. It contains your vocal cords, allows you to speak and make sounds. It also serves as the entryway to your windpipe and plays a key role in your ability to breathe.

For any larynx-related issues, you might need to visit a laryngologist, who is a doctor specialised in caring for the voice box.

Laryngologists identify and manage problems with the larynx. They give treatments, prescribe medicines, and perform surgeries when required. They also guide you on how to look after your larynx. If needed, they work with other specialists to ensure you get the right care.

When should I See a Laryngologist?

You might visit a laryngologist if you experience trouble breathing or swallowing tied to your larynx. You could also contact one if you're dealing with ongoing hoarseness that isn’t getting better. Overusing or straining your voice often leads to vocal cord issues. If untreated, these problems may cause permanent damage. If your hoarseness lingers for more than two to four weeks without a clear cause, it’s important to see a laryngologist or an otolaryngologist.

What Conditions Do Laryngologists at KIMSHEALTH Handle?

A laryngologist can help diagnose and treat various conditions, including:

  • Dysphagia: Dysphagia means trouble swallowing. It happens if your larynx doesn’t close while swallowing or if your throat fails to move food into your oesophagus. Strokes often cause this problem.
  • Laryngeal Cancer: Laryngeal cancer develops in the voice box. Smoking raises the chances of getting this type of cancer.
  • Laryngeal Papillomatosis: Laryngeal papillomatosis is an infection that lasts a long time. The human papillomavirus, or HPV, is responsible for it.
  • Laryngeal Stenosis: This happens when the airway around your larynx becomes narrower. Scar tissue forming in the airway or losing the ability to move both vocal cords can cause this condition.
  • Laryngitis: Laryngitis makes your voice box swell. Things like infections, smoking, acid reflux, or overusing your vocal cords might lead to this.
  • Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR): LPR takes place when acid from your stomach moves up into your oesophagus and reaches your throat.
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia: This happens when the muscles in your voice box spasm or tighten on their own when you try to speak. It is a nervous system condition.
  • Vocal Cord Haemorrhage: This condition happens when a blood vessel in your vocal cords bursts, causing blood to fill the soft tissues inside.
  • Vocal Cord Lesions: These growths, which are not cancerous, can show up on one or both vocal cords. They include cysts, polyps, or nodules.
  • Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD): With Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD), your cords close up when they should stay open to let you breathe.
  • Vocal Cord Paralysis: This condition occurs when one or both vocal cords fail to open or close as they should.
  • Voice Disorders: These cover different issues and symptoms that involve problems with your vocal cords or larynx.
