Dialysis

KIMS Al Shifa Hospital is a leading provider of quality dialysis services for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure. The KIMS Al Shifa staff rotates on an on-call schedule to provide emergent hemodialysis treatments for those patients who may come to the Emergency Room in fluid overload, electrolyte imbalance or other problems, which may require emergency treatment.

Procedures & Treatments

At KIMS Al Shifa Hospital, three types of kidney dialysis provides patients with life-saving treatments

  • Haemodialysis
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Nocturnal dialysis

During hemodialysis, an artificial kidney machine carries out the vital functions the kidneys can no longer perform. In this procedure, a person is connected to the machine by plastic tubing that attaches to special blood vessels in the arm or leg. The treatment can be at home or at a dialysis unit.
During peritoneal dialysis, waste products from the blood are flushed from the body with fluid instilled and drained through a catheter that has been surgically placed in the abdomen.
During nocturnal dialysis, patients undergo training to learn how to self-administer hemodialysis at night during sleep. Nocturnal dialysis typically occurs for six consecutive nights. With this prolonged dialysis, patients have no dietary restrictions; take fewer medications and are sometimes taken off blood pressure medication; have more energy and feel better; and have more free time for work or leisure activities during the day.
