DIABETES IN CHILDREN
According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015, India had 69.2 million people living with diabetes. These numbers are alarming enough, but there is no respite. A recent study by Lancet Diabetes & endocrinology journal predicts that over 98 million people may have type 2 diabetes by 2030. What’s scary is the fact that even children are at risk.
While most of us blame it on the radical shift in lifestyles including a high-calorie diet, lower physical activity levels and increased affinity towards sugar and junk food, these are just one side of the problem. The genetic factors, environmental factors, and disorders of the immunity system also play a huge role.
Diabetes in children
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that prevents the normal breakdown and use of sugar in the body. There are two common types of diabetes – type 1 and type 2. Most children are affected with type 1 diabetes and it is also referred to as juvenile diabetes.
So, what are the symptoms?
You have to consult a doctor if your child has:
1) Increased thirst & urination
4) Sudden weight loss
5) Blurred vision
6) Slow healing of cuts or wounds
Children also run a higher risk if they are obese or overweight.
What if your child is diagnosed with diabetes?
The parent has to understand that diabetes is a dangerous situation and if left untreated, it could cause permanent damage or death in some cases. Keeping a strict watch on blood glucose levels is a must. You have to watch what the child is eating round the clock. Their activity levels should also be strictly monitored. Doctors may prescribe medicines or insulin injections depending on how the sugar levels are in the child’s bloodstream.
If the child is old enough, it is essential that parents guide them to keep strict monitoring in place. However, these self-care tasks need to be supervised by parents closely. Parents have to ensure that the blood sugar levels remain within the stipulated limits all along.
The doctors and counselors at KIMS are always ready to clarify your doubts and be by your side through this tough phase.
