About Us

EXCELPACES at KIMSHEALTH

EXCELPACES is a preparatory training programme for PACES being organized by KIMSHEALTH, Trivandrum, Kerala, one of the largest healthcare providers in the country. This programme is the brainchild of a group of dynamic and highly experienced senior MRCP PACES teachers from UK, Middle East and India. The four-day intensive programme is meant to ensure success at PACES and matches the high standards of some of the foremost MRCP PACES courses in the UK and elsewhere.

The Course at KIMSHEALTH is approved by the MRCP (UK) Management Board, endorsed and supported by all the three Royal Colleges of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, which is a testament to its quality and acceptance.

The Course

EXCELPACES at KIMSHEALTH

The course is conducted as a non-profit program and is designed to provide an opportunity for aspiring MRCP candidates from all over the world, and tutored by skilled MRCP teachers from UK and Asia. At ExcelPaces, there will be a complete intensive revision of syllabus for four days structured along the lines of the current adult PACES exam. PACES stations 1,2,3,4 and 5 are covered with a Mock Exam on the last day and “Special teaching sessions” provided in the mornings on selected topics.

(2.00 to 5.00 pm) Station 2 : History taking skills

Candidates practice history taking skills in front of an examiner and each candidate gets a chance to present and be assessed. In addition, during these sessions, candidates will also have the opportunity to observe the performance of other members of their group with different scenarios.

Dr. M. I. Sahadulla

MD, FRCP (Ireland), FRCP (Lon), MBA (Hull, UK) – India

A post-graduate in General Medicine from the Trivandrum Medical College, a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians, Ireland & London and an MBA from University of Hull, UK, Dr. Sahadulla has been working with Saudi Aramco (Arabian American Oil company) Hospitals in Saudi Arabia since 1975, where he lead a team of doctors of various nationalities. He is the Founder Chairman of KIMSHEALTH Hospitals and he has established a very strong quality oriented patient care, academic and research interest in the institution. KIMS maintains an ongoing educational relationship with Royal College of Physicians of London. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Prasad Nair

MD, FRCP (London) – Kuwait

Dr. Prasad Nair is a consultant nephrologist and transplant physician working in The Ministry of Health, Kuwait. After post graduate medical education in India, he underwent training in Nephrology and Transplantation in UK and obtained his MRCP. He was actively involved in MRCP clinical teaching while in England and is an undergraduate and post graduate teacher at the Kuwait medical school. He has been involved in organizing the MRCP clinical exam including MRCP PACES since its inception in Kuwait. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. A Saifudeen

MBBS, MD FRCP (Lond), FRCP(Glas), FRCP (Ire) FRCP(Edin) & FRSPH (Lond) – Oman

Dr. Saifudeen is a Senior Consultant Physician & Hematologist at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital, Salalah, Ministry of Health, Oman. He qualified MBBS from, Trivandrum medical college, Kerala and completed his post graduate MD degree in internal medicine meritoriously, as the best outgoing student from Madras University. He obtained his MRCP (UK) in 1997 and FRCP (London) in the year 2003. He is actively involved in CME programs including the teaching and training of MRCP candidates. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Alan Patrick

MD, FRCP (Edinburgh) – UK

Dr. Alan Patrick, MD, FRCPE is a Consultant Physician and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Acute Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. As well as being a busy clinician, he has a major interest in postgraduate education, being Regional Specialty Advisor and Secretary of the UK Specialist Advisory Committee in Diabetes and Endocrinology. He is also the RCPE’s Overseas Facilitator for the Middle-East and the Assistant Registrar of the College, with a key role in the implementation and development of the MRCP examination. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Venkat Mahadevan

MBBS, MSc, FRCP (London), FCCP – UK

Consultant Physician in General and Respiratory Medicine, The James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth, UK.

After initial medical training in South India, Dr. Mahadevan acquired higher post-graduate training in General and Respiratory Medicine in the UK and has been practicing as a Physician in the NHS for the past 15 years. He is deeply involved in medical education, with the teaching & training of medical students, trainee doctors and allied healthcare professionals. He is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities at the University of Cambridge as well as the Kuwait Board. He has a track record of organizing the MRCP clinical exams & many of his UK trainees have gone on to pass the MRCP PACES at the first attempt. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Donald L Farquhar

FRCP (Edin) – UK

Consultant General Physician, St. John’s Hospital, Livingston, Scotland, Honorary Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Geriatric Medicine, University of Edinburgh, Associate Post-Graduate Dean, South East Scotland, with responsibility for training in all medical specialities and Paediatrics and Chair of the Medical Specialities Training Board for Scotland.

Dr. Farquhar qualified at the University of Edinburgh in 1979 and subsequently trained in Edinburgh and Melbourne, Australia. He has a major interest in post-graduate training and education.He is actively involved in all MRCP PACES course related activities locally and in other international centres. He has been involved in both teaching and examining MRCP PACES in the Middle East, North Africa, India and South East Asia. He is currently the College’s SE Asia Regional Facilitator and a member of its Examination Committee. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centres.

Dr. Panduka Karunanayake

MBBS (North Colombo), MD (Colombo), FRCP (London), Postgrad Cert Teach Higher Educ, Postgrad Dip ApplSociol (Colombo) – Sri Lanka

Dr. Karunanayake graduated from the North Colombo Medical College and trained in general medicine at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), Colombo, and in infectious diseases at the University Hospital Aintree (Fazakerly), Liverpool, UK. He is currently senior lecturer in clinical medicine at the University of Colombo and a specialist physician at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo. He is actively involved in postgraduate training in general medicine at the PGIM and in courses conducted by the Ceylon College of Physicians, of which he has been secretary in the past. He is active in MRCP PACES related activies. He is an examiner in general medicine (in theory, clinicals and as chief examiner in viva) for the MD at the PGIM. He has also supervised one master’s thesis, and carries out research on dengue and infections in immunocompromised patients.

Prof. Mathew Thomas

MD, FRCP (London), FRCP (Edin), FICP, FISHTM – India

He is presently working as professor of medicine and hematology in KIMS and CSI medical college. He has 33 years of clinical experience and teaching experience of under graduate and postgraduate medical students in the medical school. He is the recipient of best doctor award 2003 and past secretary and president of the Kerala chapter of API, associate editor of JAPI, undergraduate and post graduate examiner in various Indian Universities, visiting professor of hematology Washington Medical Centre and NIH, Professor and HOD, department of medicine and Superintendent medical college hospital, Trivandrum. He is very actively involved with all MRCP PACES Course related matters

Dr. Ajit Thomas

MD MRCP(UK) MRCP(London) – India

Dr. Ajit Thomas completed his post-graduation (MD) in India, and then left to pursue higher training in the UK. He passed MRCP(UK) within a few months of arriving there, and then went on to obtain training at Specialist Registrar level in Acute Medicine, General (Internal) Medicine and Geriatrics; in Cardiff and North Wales. Dr. Ajit worked as Consultant in Acute Medicine in the UK. He returned to Kerala – his state of origin – in 2008 to join KIMS as Consultant in Internal and Acute Medicine, a post that he has occupied since. Dr. Ajit has taught on MRCP PACES courses and held regular teaching sessions for SHOs and Registrars. He has nearly 20 years’ worth of experience in teaching.

Prof Sunil Bhandari

MBChB, MRCP (UK), FRCP (Edin), PhD, M Clin Edu – UK

Prof. Bhandari graduated from the University of Edinburgh, trained in Renal and Transplant Medicine in Yorkshire (UK) and Sydney Australia. He is a Consultant in Nephrology and Honorary Clinical Professor at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust; Director of Clinical Studies (HYMS), Co-Director of UK Advanced Nephrology Course and Locality Head of School of Medicine – East Yorkshire and Chair of the MBBS Programme Board.

He also serves as Royal College of Physicians Specialty Tutor for Nephrology, and a member on the Specialist Exam Writing Committee. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers. He has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals, and has successfully co-supervised 5 PhD fellows and currently has 1 fellow in training.

Dr. Cheriyil G Suresh

MD, FRCP (London) – Kuwait

Dr. Suresh is currently working as Consultant Cardiologist at Mubarak Al Kabeer Hospital, Kuwait. He is trained in Cardiology from UK Birch Hill Hospital and Wythenshawe Hospital. Though he spent majority of his time in clinical cardiology, he is very much interested in research and has published several papers. He is an undergraduate and postgraduate teacher at the University of Kuwait. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Paras Doshi

FRCPE (Edinburgh) FRCPSG (Glasgow) FRCPI (Ire) – Malaysia

Dr Paras Doshi is currently an Acute Medicine Physician based at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He graduated from International Islamic University Malaysia with the distinction of being the best overall academic scholar for his year. Dr Paras Doshi is active in the teaching and education arena for the undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has been actively involved in all PACES related activities all over Malaysia as well as the UK. He has also been appointed as a lecturer and as an Examiner for UPM (Universiti Pertanian Malaysia) and MAHSA final year medical students. He is a PACES examiner and is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Arthur Dunk

MD, FRCP (Glasg & Lond) – UK

Dr Arthur Dunk is a UK graduate ( Glasgow, 1978), and works as a consultant physician with special interest in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in East Sussex, UK. He is a qualified educational supervisor for young doctors in training, both pre and post their MRCP(UK) examinations. He has vast experience of the MRCP(UK) examinations. He has been an examiner since 1991 and examines frequently both in the UK and at overseas centres. He is often Chair of Examiners when examining. He is part of the MRCP(UK) scenario writing group and helps write and edit scenarios for stations 2 and 4 of PACES.”

Dr. Jacqueline Taylor

MB ChB FRCP – UK

Dr Taylor is a Consultant Physician in Medicine for the Elderly and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. She is a graduate of Glasgow University, and trained in the West of Scotland accrediting in both Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine. She is an experienced PACES examiner, both in the United Kingdom and internationally, and regularly hosts the exam. Dr Taylor is actively involved in preparing candidates for PACES. Current non clinical responsibilities include Vice President Medical of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, responsible for medical education, training and continuing professional development, Chair of the Cardiovascular Section of the British Geriatrics Society and member of the Board of the British Society for Heart Failure.

Proessor Charles Twort

MA, MD, FRCP, FRCPE

Charles Twort is Professor of Medical Education at King’s College School of Medicine, and Consultant Physician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London. Between 2010 – 2016 he has chaired the Specialty Question Groups for the MRCP(UK) written exams, and has been a member of the Part 1 and Part 2 Exam Boards. He is a PACES examiner, and member of the station 5 vetting group.

Dr. Vinod Kumar Kesavan

MD, IDCCM, FCCP, EDIC, MRCP(UK)

He has completed basic medical degree from Government Medical College, Trivandrum, in the year 1994 and Post Graduate training in Anesthesiology and Respiratory Medicine in 1996 and 1999 respectively from the same institute. . He was awarded MRCP (UK) and later, European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC). He has also passed Specialty Certificate Examination in Respiratory Medicine conducted by the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, and the British Thoracic Society. He is currently working as Consultant, Dept. of Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care, KIMS, Trivandrum, India.

Dr. Hala Abuzeid Ahmed Abuzeid

MD, FACP, FRCP (Lond,Glasg, Edin), DTM&H, MSc. CCST

Dr. Hala is currently working as Consultant in Critical care medicine in UAE. She completed her MBBS in 1996 and Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, from Royal College of Physicians, London, in 1998 and MSc in Infection & Health in the Tropics and Diploma in Tropical Medicine (DTM&H), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She obtained her MRCP (UK) in 2000, FRCP (London) in 2008, FRCP (Glasgow) in 2010, FRCP (Edinburgh) in 2011 and FACP (USA) in 2014. She is a current PACES examiner and is actively involved in MRCP PACES related activities in UAE and in other international centers.

Dr. Parthipan Pillai

Dr. Parthipan Pillai is a Respiratory Physician and Clinical Director of Respirator Medicine at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, UK. He has a special interest in medical education and assessment, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. He was an undergraduate Sub-Dean/Tutor for University College London Medical School for 6 years.

He has been an MRCP PACES examiner for many years, in the UK and overseas centres, and has conducted the role of Chair Examiner at both. He also hosts double cycle MRCP PACES examination twice a year.

He currently undertakes formal roles for the RCPE as a mentor for registrars and new consultants, member of station 5 vetting group, the RCPE Eastern Region Adviser and Deputy Director of Assessment.

Dr. Jacinta Morgan

Dr.Jacinta Morgan is Professor of Medicine at RCSI Bahrain Medical University. Before moving to Bahrain in 2016 she was a Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine and Neurological Rehabilitation in Cornwall, UK and Dublin, Ireland for 18 years. She held senior health policy roles in the UK between 2002 and 2015 and was a local lead investigator for several multicentre stroke and neurodisability trials between 1998 and 2007. She has wide-ranging experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, educational management and performance assessment through formal roles in medical schools, deaneries, regulatory bodies and medical royal colleges. She was centrally involved in reform of the MRCPI (Ireland) clinical exam in 2013 and founding chair of the MRCPI Clinical Exam Board. Jacinta has been a PACES examiner since 2003, and one of the panel of Chairs since 2011. Although this is her first time instructing on the ExcelPACES course she was a faculty member on Prof Parveen Kumar’s Homerton MRCP(UK) clinical course in the mid-1990’s and the Cornwall PACES course from 2003 – 2007.

Dr. Kosala Saroj Amarasiri Jayasinghe

Dr. Saroj Jayasinghe is the Chair Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo and Honorary Consultant Physician, National Hospital of Sri Lanka. He has the post-graduate MD in General Medicine from the University of Colombo, MD by thesis from University of Bristol, and PhD from University of Colombo. He is also a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians, London UK and is actively involved in CME programs including the teaching and training of MRCP candidates. He is a PACES examiner and is involved in MRCP PACES related activities locally and in other international centers.

Dr. Damodar Makunni

Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist, The James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth, UK.

After completing MD in General medicine from Trivandrum medical college, Dr.Damodar Makkuni acquired higher post-graduate training in Rheumatology in the UK and has been working in the NHS for the last 10year. He is heavily involved in medical education, with the teaching & training of undergraduates from Norwich medical school and also Postgraduate students and currently is the Director for medical education for the hospital. He is actively involved in all MRCP PACES related. He is a PACES examiner and hosts the exam at the James Paget University hospitals coordinating the various aspects of the exam including writing scenarios for the exam.

Professor Anand Prakash

MD, FRCP (London), FRCP (Edinburgh)

Prof Anand Prakash, Consultant Physician Geriatrics and General Internal Medicine is working with Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, UK. He is a Professor and Training Programme Director and Clinical MD Internal Medicine in Chester Medical School, University of Chester. Currently, he is an RCP Tutor and Lead for PG teaching in the Department of Medicine. He is also a Training Programme Director (MD, Internal Medicine, University of Chester). He is an MRCP, PACES Examiner, UK and International, a member of PACES Station 5 Vetting Committee and a Lead for National Hip fracture Database and National Falls Audit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Dr G R Letchuman

MD, FRCP

Dr G R Letchuman Ramanathan is presently the Professor of Medicine in the Clinical School Johor Bahru, Monash University Malaysia since May 2021. Prior to that he was the Physician and Endocrinologist in Department of Medicine, Hospital Ipoh, Malaysia. While he was in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, he was its National Head of Internal Medicine Services from 2014 to 2021. Until recently, he was the President of College of Physicians Malaysia (2014 – 2022). He gives lectures and conduct case discussions in national conferences in internal medicine particularly in the field of diabetes. Regularly, he trains medical officers to sit for their postgraduate exams. He is an examiner for both the MRCP PACES and local postgraduate master’s Internal Medicine exams. Frequently he is invited across the nation to facilitate teaching courses and mock exams for the above. Since obtaining his postgraduate qualifications, he has been involved in many studies both local and international, mainly in diabetes related areas, as well as in endemic goitre prevalence studies and in health system research especially on patient safety. He is invited regularly to give talks on ‘Good Clinical Practice’.

Travel and Accommodation

Trivandrum international airport is 10 Kms and the main bus station and railway station are 8 Kms away from KIMSHEALTH. KIMSHEALTH can arrange accommodation for candidates attending EXCELPACES on prior request in a nearby hotel (at the expense of the candidate).

There are excellent hotels (3 to 5 Star)  available in Trivandrum city, which are all within 30 minutes drive to the course venue.

Taxi, buses and three wheelers are always available for transportation in the city and to commute from hotel to the course venue.

For those who want to do something exciting and want to explore Kerala, the God’s Own Country, excellent site seeing tours and boating facilities in the nearby backwaters are available.

Weather: Is pleasant at this time of the year. Kerala is a highly literate state and most people can communicate in English.

Currency: Indian Rupees. Most hotels and shops accept international credit cards. It would be handy to carry some local currency for small transactions.
