Ten years in wheelchair

A 76-year-old woman who had been wheelchair bound for the past 10 years suffering from osteoarthritis in her joints underwent a successful bilateral knee replacement surgery at KIMSHEALTH Thiruvananthapuram. It was under the leadership of Dr. Muhammed Nazeer, Senior Consultant, Department of Orthopedics & Trauma, that the elderly woman from Thiruvananthapuram underwent the surgery and regained the mobility of her legs.

Ten years ago, the old woman, who was a post office collection agent, was unable to walk or stand due to severe deformities in her joints. The treatment was inordinately delayed due to the aggravation of the disease and anticipating poor results. It was at this juncture, when unable to bear the excruciating pain, she was admitted to the Orthopedics & Trauma Department of KIMSHEALTH, Thiruvananthapuram. The patient then underwent a complete knee and joint replacement surgery lasting five hours, using bone grafts and augments.

Osteoarthritis is a very common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is a chronic disease that causes severe pain and disability. It is mostly seen in people over 50 years of age. The condition is characterized by gradual wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints, which eventually becomes frayed and narrows the space between the bones. However, Dr. Muhammed Nazeer said that both her knees were deformed due to osteoarthritis, and that she was able to return to normal life through surgery with the aid of two weeks of physiotherapy.
